06/16/2006 - ISSAQUAH, WA - North American Energy Services Company (NAES), a broad-based provider of services to the power generation industry, announces that it assumed full responsibility for the operations and maintenance (O&M) of the Astoria Energy Facility (Astoria) on May 21, 2006.
Astoria is a nominal 500 MW natural-gas fired, combined cycle generating facility located at the Bowery Bay/Steinway Industrial complex of Astoria, New York in the Borough of Queens. Astoria consists of two GE 7FA+e combustion turbines, two Alstom HRSGs with duct firing capability, and one Alstom steam turbine generator. Astoria is equipped with dry low NOx gas turbine combustion technology and a selective catalytic reduction system for emissions control.
Astoria delivers power to New York City and the Borough of Queens through transmission line interconnections at Consolidated Edison's nearby substation. Consolidated Edison has contracted with Astoria Energy LLC (Astoria Energy) to buy power from Astoria for 10 years with a possible five-year extension. Astoria represents 5% of New York City's current peak power requirements. The $1 billion combined cycle facility, one of the largest built in the City in more than 25 years, is also one of the most efficient, with an estimated heat rate of about 7,200 British thermal units per kilowatt-hour. A proposed second phase of construction would add another 500 MW of capacity to the energy facility.
Massachusetts-based SCS Energy, LLC, which holds an equity interest in Astoria Energy, started development of the project in 1999 and commenced construction activities in August 2004.
Jim Croyle, President and CEO of Astoria Energy, stated: "NAES has supported our development activities for some time and is well respected in the financial community. We are confident that they will continue to meet our expectations."
Ken Seliger, President and Chief Executive Officer of NAES, stated: "NAES was chosen to operate Astoria based on its very strong track record, significant 'F' technology and New York State operations experience, and independence from competing interests."
NAES, headquartered in Issaquah, Washington, is the largest independent, third-party provider of power plant operations and maintenance services, with an experience base of more than 23,000 MW of generation capacity in a wide range of technologies, fuels, locations, customers and modes of operation. With additional offices in New York City, Pittsburgh, Carneys Point, Portland, and Houston, NAES also provides O&M support, maintenance, construction and repair, gas and steam turbine field maintenance and component repair, and the placement of temporary technical, engineering and management personnel to the generation industry.
NAES is owned by ITOCHU International Inc., the U.S. affiliate of ITOCHU Corporation. With operations in over 80 countries covering a broad range of industries, ITOCHU is among the world's largest corporations.
